Ingredients
- 1 Cup Molasses
- 1 Cup Butter Flavored Shortening
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1 Large Egg
- 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
- 6 Cups Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
- 1/2 Cup Water (hot)
- 3/4 teaspoon Ground Cloves
- 3 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Ground Ginger
- 6 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 2/3 Cups Milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together molasses, butter flavored shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
- In another bowl, whisk together baking soda, ground cloves, cinnamon, salt, ground ginger, and flour. Gradually add this mix to the wet ingredients until combined.
- Slowly mix in hot water until you reach a soft dough consistency.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place shapes on prepared baking sheets and bake for approximately 10 minutes or until edges are firm but centers remain soft.
- Allow cookies to cool before decorating with icing made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
