Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup whole milk (warm)
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 1 cup + 2 tbsp cold unsalted butter
- 7 oz cream cheese (softened)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional: fruit preserves or fresh berries for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, combine warm milk with yeast; let it sit until foamy.
- Add the egg and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients; mix until dough forms. Knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Shape cold butter into an 8-inch square between parchment paper; chill until firm.
- Roll out dough into a 16-inch square, place butter in the center, fold corners over, then roll into an 8×24 inch rectangle. Fold like a letter and chill again; repeat two more times.
- Roll final dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut into squares, add cream cheese filling in the center, shape as desired.
- Place on parchment-lined sheets to rise for one hour while preheating oven to 390°F (200°C). Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool completely before glazing with powdered sugar mixed with milk or lemon juice.
