  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp cold unsalted butter
  • 7 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: fruit preserves or fresh berries for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, combine warm milk with yeast; let it sit until foamy.
  2. Add the egg and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients; mix until dough forms. Knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Shape cold butter into an 8-inch square between parchment paper; chill until firm.
  4. Roll out dough into a 16-inch square, place butter in the center, fold corners over, then roll into an 8×24 inch rectangle. Fold like a letter and chill again; repeat two more times.
  5. Roll final dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut into squares, add cream cheese filling in the center, shape as desired.
  6. Place on parchment-lined sheets to rise for one hour while preheating oven to 390°F (200°C). Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool completely before glazing with powdered sugar mixed with milk or lemon juice.
