Ingredients
- 12 ounces pasta (fettuccine or spaghetti)
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup vegetable or chicken broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and salt. Cook for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.
- Add minced garlic and sauté for another 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
- If using, deglaze the pan with apple vinegar; scrape up browned bits. Simmer briefly.
- Stir in broth and cream; simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Mix in grated Parmesan cheese until melted; season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine cooked pasta with the sauce in the skillet; toss well to coat.
- Serve immediately, garnished with chopped parsley.
